Pigeon Wearing Backpack Filled With Drugs Captured

Criminals will do all sorts of things in an attempt to smuggle drugs into jail. Some went back to the olden days by trying to use a pigeon to bring crystal meth into a prison.

Prison guards at a correctional institute in Abbotsford, Canada, were able to capture the bird in the courtyard and confiscate the drugs on December 29, 2022.

President of the Pacific Region for Union of Canadian Correctional Officers John Randle said: “A pigeon was located at Pacific Institution, inside the walls, and it appeared to have a small package, sort of like a backpack attached to it.”

He added: “Of course, I believe there was some creative work — because the bird moved around quite a bit — in order to track it and capture it. But it was just outside one of the unit yards when it was first spotted.”

A guard originally noticed the bird had a small backpack tied to it, which prompted them to corner the pigeon in hopes of capturing it. Inside the pouch, they found approximately 30 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

While guards are meant to look for creative ways inmates might be able to smuggle drugs into the facility, Randle said he’s never seen anything like this before. “It’s definitely scary with the fact that it was crystal meth that was found on the bird because that causes a whole lot of problems,” Randle said.

An investigation is currently underway by the Correctional Service of Canada and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
