Some people’s biggest fear is flying so you can only imagine that this terrifying story had many shaking in their boots. Plane passengers were shocked when the rear door of the aircraft was ripped off shortly after takeoff.
The incident took place after taking off from Magan in the Siberian region of Yakutia, Russia. It was heading for Magadan when its rear door, usually separated from passengers by a curtain, became nothing more than a gaping hole, causing the cabin to depressurize.
The pilot was forced to make a rapid emergency landing back in Magan but the 25 passengers onboard were exposed to temperatures of -41 degrees. Luckily, boarding in such a cold location, all passengers were wearing winter coats when the door opened. They were also still strapped in from the take-off.
Passengers had their hats whipped off their heads and out into the air but thankfully everyone onboard was safe. A report said: “Fortunately, the 25 people on board, including the crew, were unharmed. Only the caps off some people’s heads flew into the white void.” An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
