Raccoon Knocks Out Power for Thousands in Toronto

It’s quite unlucky to end up at the wrong place at the wrong time. An unfortunate raccoon wandered into a transmission station and ended up causing a power outage for thousands of customers in downtown Toronto.

Hydro One wrote on X that around 7,000 downtown customers lost power for more than two hours on February 1, 2024. Crews eventually “determined that a raccoon made contact with our equipment at a downtown Toronto station.”

Tiziana Baccega Rosa, a spokeswoman for Hydro One, said that crews were able to confirm that a raccoon was behind the issue at the Church-Wellesley area transmission station “because the animal was unfortunately there on site and had perished when they arrived.”

Due to this unfortunate accident, Rosa said the company is looking into ways to prevent any similar incidents from happening in the future.
