Remote Welsh Island Offers $14 an Hour for People Willing to Live and Work There

A great way to get more people to visit a remote location is by offering an incentive. A remote Welsh island is offering anyone prepared to live or work there around $14.50 an hour.

Bardsey Island (Ynys Enlli) is located off the coast of the Llyn Peninsula in North Wales. To find wardens to live and work on the “off-grid” Welsh island, the owners put out a job opening for anyone interested in applying.

Those looking to apply will enjoy benefits including one boat trip to the mainland per month, a shared food growing space and an internet connection. Plus, they’re willing to pay $14.50 an hour to the individuals looking for a new adventure.

The island, measuring 0.69 square miles, has a population of 11 and is claimed to be the burial site of mythical wizard Merlin. It has “limited electricity,” which is provided by solar panels that can run a light, fridge freezer and internet router.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking for indoor running hot water, you’re out of luck. The island has no indoor running hot water and you must use a composting toilet, which is located outside.

The Bardsey Island Trust is looking for joint applications from two individuals who are expected to live and work together. Successful applicants will speak both English and Welsh and have their contract last from March 1, 2024, until October 30.
