Thieves Nab Apple Headphones Off Victims’ Heads

While New York City is a lively place, it’s also best to watch your back because you never know what might happen. Recently, stealing headphones right off of victims’ heads has made headlines, with at least 21 people in the city experiencing this issue.

These thefts started on January 28, 2023, with people reporting that a roving team of moped-riding bandits would come up and snatch the headphones before speeding off with them. Typically, four people have been involved in riding on two mopeds, snatching the Apple AirPods Max headphones off the victims from behind to sell later on.

The noise-canceling devices retail for $549 each, which makes these thefts a pretty solid job. The robbers have been targeting people all across Manhattan, including one incident that occurred in Central Park. The victims have ranged in age from 18 to 41 and the bulk of the thefts have happened in the mid-to-late afternoon.

Five headphones were stolen on February 8 and eight were taken on February 18 but the thieves still remain at large as no arrests have been made. Police did release a photo of the suspects riding mopeds and are hoping this helps with their investigation into arresting the sonic suspects.
