Tourists Drive Car Into Water After GPS Fail

Driving in a place you’re not familiar with can be pretty terrifying if you don’t have a reliable GPS. A pair of tourists experienced that firsthand when their car ended up in a harbor in Hawaii after a GPS failure.

The vacationers were trying to get to a manta ray tour in Kailua-Kona on April 29, 2023, when their mapping system took them on an unexpected dip. They were directed into a harbor after their GPS told them to keep going until their Dodge Caravan was in the water.

Now, for something like this to happen, a lack of common sense is definitely involved.

“I think they just must’ve taken their eyes off the road for a second,” witness, Christie Hutchinson, said. At the time, Hutchinson was about to take her boat in from the harbor with her husband and their friends when the car suddenly drove down the boat ramp and into the water.

“I was just sitting there trying to seek shelter from the rain, and then the next thing, I saw a car drive directly past our boat straight into the harbour at a pretty decent speed,” Hutchinson said.

Fortunately for everyone, Hutchinson recorded the entire thing and posted it on Instagram. In the video, the two women were rescued as the van slowly became submerged in water.
