Don’t Go Swimming During a Hurricane

As if it wasn’t already common sense enough, we’ll say it again: don’t go swimming during a hurricane. Apparently, some people didn’t get the memo and decided to go for a dip along a beach in Florida, as Hurricane Ian was making landfall.

Despite the area being under an evacuation order and officials urging people to leave the area, a group of swimmers hit the shores of a beach in Fort Myers to catch some waves. A reporter for a local news station posted a video on Twitter about the idiots.

Brenna Weick captioned her tweet: “DO NOT DO THIS: People are swimming on Fort Myers Beach by the pier. I can’t stress enough how dangerous this is.”

The three people in the video were seen entering the churning waters near a pier. After splashing around for a while, they got bored and retreated back onto the beach. Even by that point, the waters in the area were quite high, with waves splashing a few feet above them and onto the pier.

Hurricane Ian was labeled as a powerful Category 4 storm when it made landfall in Florida. The storm surge for the area was around 18 feet as the hurricane moved in, according to the National Hurricane Centre (NHC).
