Man Shot by Hidden Gun During MRI Scan

As if it wasn’t obvious before, this story might prove that you don’t need to carry a gun with you absolutely everywhere you go. A man in Brazil was accidentally shot dead after he kept a gun hidden on his body during a scan by an MRI machine.

Before an MRI scan, technicians will always warn patients to remove metallic objects such as jewellery, nicotine patches, hearing aids and glucose sensors. Even magnetic eyelashes get the boot as they can affect how the machine works.

Leandro Mathias de Novaes didn’t listen to the advice and reportedly brought a concealed weapon into the diagnostic center Laboratorio Cura in Sao Paulo, Brazil, back in January 2023. The magnetic field from the machine reportedly pulled the weapon from his waistband and caused a shot to be fired, which struck the pro-gun lawyer.

Mathias was hospitalized following the incident but later died of his injuries. The victim did not mention his gun at the time of the surgery and signed the forms regarding safety protocols. Both he and his mother were also warned about metal objects.

“We would like to emphasize that all accident prevention protocols were followed by the Cura team, as is customary in all units,” Laboratorio Cura said in a statement.
