Michigan Sportscaster Uses Cartoon Drawings for Football Highlights

Local news networks can find them in tricky situations trying to show highlights of a big college game depending on what rights are available. The workaround? A Michigan sportscaster decided to draw cartoons depicting the biggest plays of a college football game.

NBC 25 sportscaster Sam Ali delivered a unique segment when he was trying to recap the College Football Playoff final between the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies held at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. With games running late into the evening and broadcasts still being aired, it puts most late newscasts in a difficult spot when trying to recap games that may have just finished or are still going on.

To get around this, Ali delivered highlights in the form of cartoon drawings depicting the biggest plays of the game including Donovan Edwards’ two touchdown runs in the first half and the big interception by Michael Penix that kicked off the third quarter. He even depicted Jim Harbaugh holding up the trophy to close out the highlight package.

Ali made sure to share the hilarious segment on X for everyone to enjoy. “So the Michigan game just went final when we went on-air tonight and we’re not allowed to show highlights until the broadcast is completely over. But I promised the viewers ‘highlights’ and I tried to deliver the best I could,” Ali said.
