Statue of Man Appearing to Hold His Penis Unearthed in Turkey

When a new discovery is unearthed, it’s hard not to be excited but what if that statue is acting a bit vulgar? The statue of the man holding his penis was discovered in Turkey and many believe it to be around 11,000 years old.

Archaeologists working at the ancient Karahan Tepe site in Turkey made their spectacular find during their recent excavations. According to a statement from Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the enormous statue, which stands a 7.5 feet fall, was found “fixed to the ground in a bench.”

The statement went on to add that the statue of the man holding his phallus is one of “the most impressive examples of prehistoric art” and that it has “a realistic facial expression” and emphasized “ribs, spine and shoulder bones.” For the muse’s sake, at least the original designers got the details right.

Among the community, it’s also believed that the man may have been a “progenitor of a social group.” “Any interpretation of the statue is conjectural at this point,” Ted Banning, an anthropology professor at the University of Toronto, said. He added: “The fact that the figure is clutching its penis is also consistent with this interpretation by potentially symbolizing that this person was the progenitor of a social group, such as a lineage or clan, associated with the building.”

While this discovery is fascinating, archaeologists aren’t quite yet sure how old this carving and another of a small vulture found nearby are. Karahan Tepe is thought to be 11,000 years old, which could help with determining the age of these two artworks.
