Taiwan Leaning Temple Draws Inspiration From the Tower of Pisa

Taiwan’s Chiayi County has a unique temple that sits on a slanted slope and it takes on the identity of being Taiwan’s version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The temple wasn’t initially designed to be on a slope. The tilt is a result of Typhoon Morakot which led to significant amounts of rainfall causing severe flooding throughout Taiwan. The typhoon created The Taihe Zhenxing Palace, a place of worship that is situated at an angle of 45 degrees.

It’s a miracle that the colorful temple of Taihe Village lasted through the storm and the landslides. Even though it’s slanted due to the storm, the architecture is still intact for people to witness and worship.

Tourists from all over the world visit the temple after increasing social media exposure. They just have to tilt their heads if they want a good look at the holy building.

This temple can be a visual representation that religion is meant to adapt to external forces and circumstances. Nothing is in a permanent state, not even a place of worship. Going with the flow, even in a slanted position, may just be the road to enlightenment.
