Tokyo Launches Matchmaking App to Boost Marriages

Finding a special someone just got a whole lot easier. In 2024, Tokyo will be launching a matchmaking app that can be used by residents to help find the partner of their dreams.

The matchmaking service will allow any residents or people who work or study in Tokyo to sign up. To join, documentation from users’ hometowns to prove that they are unmarried is required. Tokyo hopes this process will discourage fraudsters and those who are already married from signing up.

A survey completed by the capital city in 2021 found that dating apps were the most common method used by people seeking romantic partners, with 14.5 percent of respondents choosing that option. These services haven’t been the best though, which is why the local government has started to increase their involvement.

According to the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, Tokyo had a larger share of never-married people at age 50 than anywhere else in Japan in 2020, with 32.15 percent of men and 23.79 percent of women being unmarried.

The capital hopes to lower these figures by giving singles a new avenue to meet potential partners by working with a private company to create a safer and more popular way to find that special someone.
