Conflict in a marriage isn’t out of the ordinary but what happens when the cause of the dispute is out of one’s control? An Australian woman got on her husband’s nerves after farting in front of him and their marriage of nine years has now entered shaky grounds since he won’t stop shaming her for it.
An anonymous woman shared her relationship struggles online, saying that her marriage with her husband has not been the same ever since she farted in front of her husband. Farting was enough to drive a wedge between this couple.
Her husband has specific standards for bodily functions and anything that falls outside of that standard is frowned upon. “From very early on in our relationship he made his views on this specific bodily function very clear after a night out at the pub with some friends,” she said.
For example, one of the woman’s female friends burped in front of them during an evening out. He couldn’t let it go as he complained about her “uncouth” friend for an hour after they got home. Ever since that incident, the woman has started to walk on eggshells around him, trying not to piss him off with her bodily functions.
However, you can only push nature’s call to a limit. The woman ended up farting in her sleep one night and her husband wasn’t ready to cut his resting wife any slack. “That is absolutely revolting,'” she recalls him telling her.
He added that farting is “the most unladylike thing” a woman could do, “especially in front of her husband.”
The wife was embarrassed about the incident and wasn’t able to drift off back to sleep.
She apologized the next morning for something out of her control. Although he forgave her, he kept bringing it up as a story to shame her. For instance, if the couple sits down to watch a movie and a woman farts on the screen, he never fails to remind me “how disgusting it is by making a disgruntled noise or even talking about how uncivilized it is afterwards.”
“[It’s] as if he is teaching me a lesson and making sure that I will never do it again,” she said.
The wife was feeling disheartened by the constant shaming and turned to a friend for advice on the situation. “Instead of suggesting anything helpful she was just outraged that this was how my husband was behaving, telling me that farting and burping is a natural bodily function and that it isn’t offensive or disgusting and that I shouldn’t feel guilty about it,” she said.
Most responders to the post agreed with her friend, that her husband’s behavior isn’t reasonable or normal. His words are insulting and a sign of immaturity.
The woman might need a new partner who lets her fart in peace.
