Diver Fights With Octopus Over Stolen GoPro

It was a tough battle between an underwater photographer and a cheeky octopus in Australia. The octopus stole a GoPro camera after it fell into the water and it wouldn’t give up on the tech gadget without a fight.

Maree Clout from Jervis Bay Through My Eyes managed to retrieve the camera and selfie stick from the octopus. The camera belonged to a 15-year-old snorkeller named Jesse Loffel who lost the item in Jervis Bay, Australia.

“A young guy appeared next to us and when I asked him if he was ok, he replied that he needed our help,” Clout said. “I had all sorts of dilemmas go through my mind. I asked him what was wrong and his reply was: ‘An octopus took my camera.’

“He took us to where he last saw his camera and sure enough, there was the eight-armed ‘robber’ with each of them tightly wrapped around the GoPro. “After filming the octopus hugging his loot, I dived down and picked up the handle.”

The octopus had a strong hold on the camera but the diver managed to wiggle it out of the creature.

“He really didn’t want to let it go, so I had no choice but to lift the GoPro up with it on it. Man, he was heavy,” Clout added.

The 52-year-old has lived in Jervis Bay her life and she’s an avid snorkeller who goes out at least once a week. So wrestling with the octopus wasn’t that intimidating for her.

“I’ve learnt to love octopuses, so I wasn’t too worried about trying to get the camera back. We often watch the comings and goings of these guys. If we give them a little gift, usually a shell, they will immediately reach out their tentacles to grab it,” she said.

The young boy is happy to trade any shell for his valuable camera. There are no shattered lenses in this story, just cool underwater footage from the events.
