German Ice Cream Parlor Offers Cricket-Flavored Scoops

Ice cream is a delicious treat that everyone enjoys, even when it’s turned on its head. A German ice cream parlor has added to its menu by offering cricket-flavored scoops topped with dried brown crickets.

For those looking to expand their taste buds, Thomas Micolino’s ice cream parlor in southern Germany offers just that. Micolino is known for creating flavors that are different from what Germans typically prefer when it comes to ice cream (think strawberry, chocolate, banana and vanilla).

In the past, he’s cooked up flavors like liver sausage and Gorgonzola cheese ice cream, as well as gold-plated ice cream for just $4.25 per scoop.

“I am a very curious person and want to try everything,” Micolino said. “I’ve eaten a lot of things, including a lot of strange things, and crickets were something I still wanted to try, also in the form of ice cream.”

Due to a European Union regulation change that allows the use of insects in food, Micolino can now produce cricket-flavored ice cream for anyone curious enough to try. Under these new regulations, crickets may be frozen, dried or used as a powder.

Micolino’s ice cream is created using cricket flour, heavy cream, vanilla extract and honey, topped with dried whole crickets. Apparently, it has a “surprising yummy taste.”

While some people have been disgusted by the idea, Micolino said he also has many customers excited to try the new flavor. “Those who try it are very enthusiastic,” Micolino said. “I have customers who come here every day and buy a scoop.”

One of his loyal customers, Konstantin Dick, gave the cricket-infused flavor two thumbs up by saying: “Yes, it’s really very tasty and edible.”
