Okay, twin babies — mom needs more than one penis, so say hello to your two dads. A 19-year-old woman in Brazil has given birth to twins who have two different biological fathers and it’s a rare case that stunned doctors with the labor reveal.
The birth is the aftermath of having sex with two men on the same day and getting pregnant by both of them. If the woman knew she could strike the baby luck twice, she might have shut her legs the second time. The mother recalled: “I didn’t know this could happen.”
The impossible became possible after the woman attempted to identify her baby daddy via a DNA test. She assumed one of the men had to be the father of the twins but the results revealed a different story. The DNA sample of one man matched one baby but not the other.
The results were hard to believe but her sex history started to reveal more clues that support the DNA findings. “I remembered that I had had sex with another man and called him to take the test, which was positive,” she said.
Despite the bizarre baby-making incident, both children were born healthy.
Her case is a result of heteropaternal superfecundation. This scenario occurs when a woman releases two eggs instead of one during a menstrual cycle, and the eggs get fertilized by sperm cells from two different men. In this case, the woman had sex with two men on the same day and each of her eggs was fertilized by a different sperm cell.
Tulio Franco, her doctor, said: “It’s extremely rare. It happens one in a million. I never imagined that I would see a case like this in my life.”
Although they may have two different biological dads, only one man stepped up to the parenting role. As a result, the birth certificate will have the same father’s name and this will spare the children from having to provide explanations to nosy strangers during their lifetime.
