There are moments as a pet owner that are pretty great and then some that are extremely bad. A woman got a whiff of the worst when she was hospitalized for three days after her pooch took a poop on her face while she was asleep.
Amanda Gommo was enjoying an afternoon nap when her chihuahua Belle decided to join her. Instead of settling down to also have a nap, Belle decided to pop a squat and diarrhea onto Amanda’s face.
“I was having my afternoon nap with Belle, like I always do, when I suddenly felt something squirt in my mouth,” Gommo said. “It was disgusting, and I was hurling violently for hours after — I just couldn’t get the taste out of my mouth.”
Gommo’s daughter took the dog to the vet, where she was diagnosed with a stomach bug. To combat the illness, she was put on antibiotics. Later that day, Gommo also started displaying the same symptoms as Belle. Paramedics prescribed her painkillers for her stomach cramps and instructed her to drink lots of water to flush out any potential infection.
After their visit, Gommo’s symptoms worsened. She was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary and immediately hooked up to a drip. Doctors were able to diagnose Gommo with a gastrointestinal infection that had been passed through Belle’s feces into her mouth two days earlier.
She was kept under observation for three days and was finally discharged after the hospital was able to rehydrate her with the electrolytes and glucose she needed. “My discharge note said that I’d suffered a gastrointestinal infection caused by a dog defecating in my mouth — something doctors had never witnessed before,” Gommo said.
Thankfully, the pair are now on the mend and Belle has been forgiven for her little incident.
