Green Slime Oozes Onto New York City Streets

It’s not every day that green slime bubbles up from the sewers. A fluorescent, green liquid oozing from manholes caused quite the confusion in New York City.

The mysterious sludge was first posted on X by Daniel Pantelo. “So there’s literal green sludge bubbling up from the ground next to World Trade Center right now,” he captioned a photo showing off the bizarre liquid.

In a follow-up post, Pantelo said that many people were walking through the slime casually, while others stopped to stare at it in confusion. Apparently, this might not be the first time seeing this goo for some New Yorkers as a similar liquid infiltrated a Brooklyn subway station back in March.

Fortunately, the likely source was not as radioactive as it may seem. A disclaimer was added to the original X post, which reads: “This is water full of green dye. Plumbers frequently use harmless, fluorescent green dye to detect leaks in plumbing and sewage systems.”

According to the National Park Service, “dye tracing” can also be used to “help scientists visualize how water moves from one place to another.” Looks like the green slime that could rival the liquid in “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” might be doing more good than harm.
