Guilty Seal Surrenders at Police Station

A seal escaped the authorities only to be greeted by the cops at the Beverly Police Station.

The gray seal first appeared earlier this month in Shoe Pond in the city of Beverly, northeast of Boston. The animal is believed to have traveled to the Massachusetts pond from the sea via a river and drainage pipes. The seal quickly became a local attraction and was even named “Shoebert” after its chosen pond.

Firefighters and wildlife experts used boats and giant nets in an effort to capture the wily animal but gave up after several fruitless hours. Based on the police statement, Shoebert left the pond, crossed a parking lot and appeared outside the side door of the local police station looking.

It took a village to contain this bold mammal, as was posted on the Beverly Police Facebook page: “Within a short period of time the entire midnight shift, Beverly Animal Contol, Members of NOAA, International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Beverly Fire Department all came to the rescue of Shoebert. We were able to get Shoebert into a special wildlife carrier without incident. Shoebert appeared to be in good health and was a little sassy in the early morning hours.”

Shoebert was transported to the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut for examination and any required medical care before releasing it back into the wild.

The police officers fell in love with Shoebert and they welcome her back as they could always use more claws at the station. The Facebook statement concluded: “Thank you Shoebert for having faith in the BPD, you will be deeply missed by your friends here. Over the past week, you brought a lot of joy and happiness to our city. Feel free to come back and visit anytime!”
