This Hotel Is Actually a Sculpture on an Australia Highway

Most people will thoroughly check out the hotel they plan on staying at on vacation before booking a room but what happens if such information doesn’t exist? A hotel on the side of an Australian highway has been turning heads for actually being a sculpture.

Hotel Eastlink sits alongside a stretch of highway just outside of Melbourne, Australia. While driving by quickly, it can be hard to uncover the real truth behind the hotel, which is that it’s really just a work of art.

Local artist Callum Morton unveiled his work back in 2007 and it has confused motorists ever since. The sculpture stands 20 meters tall, 12 meters wide and five meters thick and has actually led many to believe you can book a room at the hotel.

To make it even more confusing, at night, some of the windows light up, which makes it seem like some of the rooms are occupied. In reality, the hotel doesn’t have any rooms and the building itself can’t be entered.

“Motorists will view it from the car as an actual hotel and perhaps over time as a strangely de-scaled prop that has escaped a theme park or film set,” Morton said. Even after almost two decades, his creation still plays with people’s minds as they pass by.

“I think it’s kind of interesting how putting something in a space that is slightly beguiling or is a little bit strange, how that maybe changes the way people think about art or practice,” Morton said.
