Bald Men Gather to Compete in Suction Cup Tug of War

A bald head might be the ideal surface to attach suction cups for a game of tug of war. The Japanese town of Tsuruta is known for hosting a “Suction Cup Tug-of-War” tournament featuring tug of war where bald men place suction cups to their heads and pull in opposite directions. The person whose suction cup falls off first emerges as the loser.

Following the pandemic lockdowns, the game was finally able continue for the first time in three years and players are having a blast with their bald heads.

The Tsuruta Hagemasu Association introduced the game as a way to promote baldness in a positive manner. The organization has the following motto, “The light of baldness is the light of peace, illuminating the dark world brightly.” Bald men typically face low self-esteem, causing them to spiral into anxiety and depression. The committee seeks to alleviate some of that negative stigma by embracing the shiny heads.

Suction cup tug-of-war tournaments have been held annually since 1989. The game quickly gained popularity among the participants and audience. Later it was renamed the National Sucker Tug of War Tournament and participants from all over Japan joined for entertainment.

Mr. Ota has been the champion of the game for the third consecutive time, making him a memorable figure in the sport.

When crowds of bald people join forces to yank at each other, it’s impossible to be ashamed of the smooth head. The organization has served its purpose by replacing the shame with wide smiles.
