“Jakie” Robinson Road Sign Misspelled in New York City

When honoring greats, it’s extremely important to get their names spelled correctly. New York City’s Department of Transportation struck out when they misspelled a road sign for the Jackie Robinson Parkway.

The sign was spotted in the Queens neighborhood and featured a picture of the Hall of Famer and Major League Baseball’s first African American player in the modern era. There was only one problem: his name was misspelled on the sign.

Instead of “Jackie Robinson Parkway,” the sign in place actually read “Jakie Robinson Parkway. Fortunately, the Department of Transportation spokesperson Scott Gastel said the botched sign was quickly replaced the next day.

Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier when he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The road was formerly known as the Interboro Parkway and was renamed for Robinson in 1997, the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking rookie season.
