Japanese Farmers Create Sweet and Sour Lemon Melon

For food lovers that get a thrill out of tasting unique food combinations, Japanese farmers have introduced “The Lemon Melon.” This fruit brings together the sweetness and scent of the melon and combines it with a tinge of sourness from the lemon. If you can’t decide whether to go for something sweet or sour, maybe take a bite out of this lemon melon.

Suntory Flowers, a Japanese horticulture company, worked on the lemon melon for five years and they created it using a melon imported from overseas. The experimental process involved different cultivation methods and harvest times.

The final product could be a refreshing snack for a hot summer day since it’s made from lemons so the sour taste is still there along with the juicy, sweet taste from the melon.

In a YouTube video, the lemon melon looks like the typical melon shape but it has a white flesh and the rind don’t have the melon stripes. The supply of lemon melons are fairly limited as there are only five farmers in Hokkaido producing lemon melons, and they are expected to grow approximately 3,800 lemon melons this year.

People can buy the lemon melon from Japanese supermarkets for $22 per fruit.

The taste might be a hit with the customers. “It has a faint sourness like a lemon but the strong sweetness of a melon. It’s delicious,” one person said.

“It has a good balance of sweet and sour. It would be the perfect fruit for a hot day,” another added.
