Man Charged After Death Occurs at Slapping Therapy Workshop

Don’t get too slap-happy as it could lead to someone’s demise. After seven years, a man has finally been charged over the death of a woman that happened at a slapping therapy workshop.

Danielle Carr-Gomm was 71 years old when she died at Cleeve House in Seend, Wiltshire, on October 20, 2016. The man responsible for her death, 60-year-old Hongchi Xiao, has now been charged with manslaughter by gross negligence, after being extradited to the United Kingdom.

According to the woman’s family, Carr-Gomm had attended the slapping therapy workshop at the country hotel with the hopes it would help her diabetes. The workshop allegedly involved paida lajin therapy, in which patients were slapped or slapping themselves repeatedly.

A warrant for Xiao’s arrest was issued in October 2019 after it was determined who was at fault for Carr-Gomm’s death. According to Wiltshire Police, Xiao was arrested after returning to the U.K. from Australia on an extradition warrant and was taken to Gablecross custody where he was charged.
