Mother Tells Daughter She Needs Double-Eyelid Surgery

Double-eyelid surgery has become an increasing trend across Asia over the last few years. The procedure, called Asian blepharoplasty, involves creating an eyelid crease where there wasn’t one before; the result is a larger and more rounded-looking eye.

About half the Asian population is born without an upper eyelid crease and procedures to change that have existed since the end of the 19th century. Westernized beauty standards at an all-time high have led to some parents urging their children to have double-eyelid surgery, even at young ages.

One Japanese mother has come under fire when she told the media that she wanted her nine-year-old daughter to go under the knife to receive the procedure. The mother, Rucchi, said that double eyelids are the beauty standard and that she suffered as a child for their lack and she didn’t want her daughter to experience a similar fate.

“My mother and younger sister have big eyes, while I had a monolid,” Rucchi said. “Everyone thought my younger sister was much cuter than me. Women in the neighbourhood blatantly just called my sister cute and gave her sweets. I’ve never been told anything like that.”

She added: “A girl needs double eyelids. I have never seen a girl with monolids who I thought was pretty.”

The daughter, Micchi, did undergo the operation, which took two hours instead of the 20 minutes that had been scheduled. Apparently, there was an issue with the anesthetic.

“If you can endure the pain of plastic surgery, that makes you a beautiful person, in my opinion,” Micchi said.
