Plane Forced to Return as Destination Airport Refuses Landing

Flying to your destination only to have to return to the original departure airport has been happening more and more frequently as people have started traveling again. A Japan Airlines plane was forced to make an unplanned return because it got to its destination 10 minutes late.

The plane carrying 335 passengers on board was scheduled to land at the Fukuoka Airport in Hakata-ku, in Fukuoka prefecture. The jet left Haneda Airport in Tokyo after an hour-and-a-half delay on February 19, 2023.

According to reports, the airplane landed in Fukuoka 10 minutes after the final landing cutoff of 10 p.m. It was not allowed to land at the airport so the crew had to continue their journey back to Tokyo for another five hours. The pilot did have to make a pit stop at the Kansai Airport to have the jet serviced and refueled on the way back.

The plane landed safely in Tokyo at 2:50 a.m. and later that morning, the airline transported the passengers arranged to be flown to Fukuoka from the hotel where they had been staying.

The reason behind the landing not being allowed is because people live nearby. All aircrafts are prohibited from landing in Fukuoka after 10 p.m. to prevent them from being disturbed. The deadline can often be extended depending on inclement weather or other circumstances.
