Astronauts Lose $100,000 Tool Bag From NASA Spacewalk

Doing repairs in space is no walk in the park, even for the most experienced astronauts. NASA astronauts lost a tool bag worth $100,000 during a maintenance spacewalk on the International Space Station.

The routine spacewalk happened on November 1, 2023, when astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara went out to do some upkeep on the craft. The white satchel eluded the astronauts and is now orbiting the Earth around 200 miles above the planet.

Experts say that the tool bag is expected to remain in orbit for a few more months. Around March 2024, it is expected to descend and disintegrate in Earth’s atmosphere.

For now, the tool bag has been officially cataloged as space junk ID 58229 / 1998-067WC. It was last seen on November 5, 2023, by Japanese astronaut Satoshi Furukawa floating over Mount Fuji. Where will it end up? We’ll just have to wait and see.
