Man Creates “Magpie God” After Attempting to Scare Away Birds

Magpies can be feisty birds so it’s understandable to want to make something to scare them away. A man’s attempt to frighten magpies away from his backyard backfired after they began “worshiping” the homemade scarecrow.

Giulio Cuzzilla started seeing magpies around his home when they began stealing kibble from his cat’s feeding bowl. In order to stop them, he crafted a homemade “owl” with the hopes that it would do the trip.

Rather than scare the birds, they instead started squawking at the object. In a TikTok posted by Cuzzilla, it almost looks like the magpies found a new God they were worshiping. “They got used to it, and got closer and closer, realizing it was not a threat. And then they started worshiping it,” Cuzzilla said.

The magpies regularly visited the statue outside of his suburban home in western Sydney, Australia, for over a month. That was until a storm drenched his backyard, soaked the paper bird, and its head fell off.

While many online joked that the object looked nothing like an owl, Cuzzilla explained the decision. “I was looking online to buy one of those owls on Bunnings Warehouse, but they cost a bit, so I thought I’d just make one. I made it out of paper mache and feathers that I got from the $2 store.”
