Fake kidnapping a child is apparently one way to make some extra money. A Colombian mother is being accused of staging her own toddler’s kidnapping as a way to get ransom money from the boy’s father.
On November 12, 2023, it was reported that a two-year-old boy had been kidnapped in Caribe Verde, Columbia. The child had allegedly been taken right out of the arms of his helpless mother as she was walking on the street by two helmet-wearing assailants who approached the woman on motorcycles.
When police arrived on the scene, they started questioning the woman about what happened. It wasn’t long before someone reported the presence of a child fitting the kidnapping victim’s description in a Caribe Verde apartment.
When the police entered the apartment, they discovered that the boy was in the care of a friend of his mother’s. The woman had ended up calling the police to report that her 17-year-old son had come home with a boy that fit the victim’s description.
After questioning the teen, officers learned that he was a friend of the boy’s mother and that she had asked him to take care of the boy for a few days. She had planned to extort $14,700 out of the boy’s father as ransom for the child.
Currently, the two-year-old is safe in the father’s care while the mother awaits her upcoming charges in jail.
